Description:
Full Race Ford Galaxie 500-2 door Coupe-1964 model- 427-White with Blue Stripes
Chassis No: 4J66X103226 Imported into England: 5th December 1988

At the beginning of the 1960’s,Ford of America became heavily involved in NASCAR racing and the car they put their mighty resources into was the Galaxie.Fierce competition with arch rival Chevrolet, lead to rapid improvement and development,by Holman & Moody, of the legendry FE 427 cubic inch engine. The 2 door 500 coupe was introduced in 1963 and was very successful in NASCAR – 2 of these Holman & Moody developed Galaxie’s were sent over to England in May 1963 for the Willment Ford team – Jack Sears went on to win the 1963 British Saloon Car Championship in one of these. To maintain their competitive lead,Ford continued to develop the Galaxie and the lighter 1964 model – described by Ford as “ a car bred in open competition and built for total performance” represented the pinnacle of the evolution.

This 1964 model was built and stayed in California- where it had never been rained on-until imported into the UK in December 1988.
A total body off race build was carried out by the late Jim Morgan of JTM Racing Services, which was completed in October 1989,just in time for the last HRSR Historic saloons race of the season-where it was placed 3rd overall.

The build and subsequent development, included – seam welding of chassis-new rated rear and front springs-specially valved shockabsorbers-3.5:1 Detroit Locker differential-1000hp Strange drive shafts-4 speed RUG top loader gearbox-anti tramp bars-panhard rod-fabricated prop shaft with Drag racing universal joints-purpose built Gartrac roll cage-lightweight panels-sand blast and bare body respraying in Ford Ermine White-Full race 500+ hp 427 engine-custom exhaust manifolds-High Rise aluminium inlet manifold-disc brakes-fabricated brake balance with twin master cylinders-etc.etc.etc.-A photographic record of the build will be supplied with the car, also a substantial file of technical detail, parts contacts etc.Together with original MSA Homolgation Papers.

The package proved to be successful and after initial engine problems, the car went on to score 3 outright wins and 6 class wins in its first season.Numerous other class and outright wins both un the UK and on the Continent –including LeMans Bugatti and Magny Cours – followed over succeeding years – which earned this Galaxie a formidable reputation. On one of its last outings,it lead the inaugural Top Hat 1 hour race at Silverstone by up to 14 seconds, until fuel starvation slowed it and allowed Nick Wale’s Falcon to pass it on the very last corner.

Race times recorded,include: Nevers Magny –Cours-2.13.54-114.565Km/h;Croix en Ternois-1.08.07-99.51Km/h;Silverstone National Circuit-1.09.9-135.84Km/h;Mallory Park-55.9-139.92Km/h

It was converted to FIA App K spec and has full, current HTP papers, issued by the RAC MSA.It was later converted back to the slightly more modified HSCC/Historic Racing Saloon Register spec, which is the form in which it is offered for sale.A number of the parts required to re-convert it to FIA spec are offered with the car – which is in full running,on the button condition, although it has not been raced for 5 seasons. It has a new set of CR65 tyres fitted.

The lightweight panels comprise- Bumpers,Front Wings,Bonnet,Boot Lid and Lexan side windows – the originals, together with various other hard to find body parts, spare front uprights,FIA Kelsey Hayes calipers, rear deep heat sink drums, back plates and shoes, sundry mechanical spares and a fitted car cover can be collected from the vendor after sale,by the buyer.

It has not changed hands since being imported, having been owned and raced by the vendor.
Also driven by Gerry Marshall and Jeremy Walton, many magazine articles have been written about the car, which was the first Galaxie 500 to appear in UK historic racing and its success and charismatic appearance, has lead to the strong following the mark now enjoys.
With regular race appearances by one or other of the 4 similar but 1963 cars presently racing in the UK-a recent high point being victory in the StMary’s Trophy at Goodwood by a Galaxie driven by Jackie Oliver.
