1990 Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo IMSA GTO
1990 Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo IMSA GTO.
One of seven examples of Nissan's highly successful IMSA GTO program of the late 1980's and early 1990's is this 1990 Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo IMSA GTO Race car, designed by Trevor Harris. Clayton Cunningham Racing (CCR) developed seven IMSA GTO race cars for the Nissan Racing Department (NISMO) to complete in the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) to directly compete against the best from Ford, General Motors, as well as other major auto manufactures in IMSA's highly successful GTO class.
In the class, GTO, dominated by the very well funded GTO cars from Ford and GM, Nissan developed a Grand Touring racing program based on its highly successful IMSA GTP prototype that domintated IMSA in the late 1980's and selected very well known Grand Touring race car builder Clayton Cunningham Racing (CCR) known for developing the dominate IMSA GTU Mazda RX7, to construct the new IMSA GTO Nissans.
After a few early attempts with the short wheel base chassis' and some success in GTO, CCR constructed it's first LWB Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo IMSA GTO race car, chassis 004 in late 1990.
Powering chassis 004 is the GTP, race proven Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo all aluminum V6 producing an amzing 700HP. At Le Mans, a sister Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo hit 204 MPH, despite the chicane and in IMSA the GTO Nissans hit a higher top speed than that of the Nissan GTP cars..
In competition for the first time at IMSA's last event of the 1990 season at Del Mar, chassis 004 made its debut with Nissan factory driver, New Zealander, Steve Millen. A vast improvement was noted in the the handling of 004 over the previous three chassis built and track times verified proof of that, with Millen taking the pole position in GTO at Del Mar.
Chassis 004 was campaigned throughout the 1991 IMSA GTO season which brought six more pole positions for Steve Millen at Miami, Mosport, New Orleans, Portland, Road America and Watkins Glen and four wins, Long Beach, Road America, Watkins Glen and Lime Rock Park, all with Steve Millen driving. Additional factory Nissan drivers, Johnny O'Connell and Jeremy Dale were on board at the 12 Hous of Sebring where 004 finished 2nd in GTO.
All toll, 004 took seven poles, four firsts, eight podium finishes in just twenty one races, including three races in 1994 by Eric Van De Poele taking a second and third.
Now restored, the Nissan chassis 90-004 300ZX Twin Turbo IMSA GTO race car is being offered for sale and the sale includes a large assortment of gear sets, as well as various mechanical components.
