Race Car Transport
Historic Leyland Leopard Motorhome Double Transporter
Historic racing transporter.
1982 Leyland Leopard. (Lionel the Large).
Ex express coach, sleeps four cosily, five at a pinch and carries two cars (one saloon and one single seater).
This well-known transporter has been in my family ownership for more than 15 years and has travelled the UK, Europe and Switzerland supporting Formula Junior, Karts, Junior Saxo, Historic saloons, FF2000, LeMans, the Copenhagen GP’s and, of course, Goodwood.
A grown-up family and retirement means it is time for another team to enjoy the pleasures of this fully kitted-out, centrally heated, mobile house, workshop and car transporter.
Although now 40years old and therefore optionally tax and Mot exempt I keep this vehicle in full HGV test condition and have it properly serviced every year.
Internal facilities include toilet and hot shower, kitchen (two-burner stove, grill, oven and microwave) , breakfast bar, 2 double(ish) beds, TV, forward seats and sideways sofa (also doubles as a bed), main table and wardrobe, plus food storage in cupboards and overhead lockers, and 12, 24, and 240volt electrics. There is sufficient water and battery capacity for up to 5 days without hookup, and for extended away-time Lionel carries a large petrol generator and a boost charger, plus gas supply, spare wheel and tools in his external lockers.
Technically, Lionel is powered by a Leyland 680 and a six speed ZF manual gearbox. Cruising speed is 56-60mph. Max is 80mph (brave man). Fuel consumption works out at 11mpg. The tyres are 4000miles old, batteries are new for this year and I believe Lionel the Large is ready to take on any trip one should wish to make. After 15 years of our use Lionel is best described as "heavily patinated”, but I am sure any new owner will wish to add their own interpretation to colour schemes and layouts.
Furthermore, membership of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society ensures peace of mind with country-wide support and free beakdown recovery.
