Lola Mazda B12/80 AER Factory IMSA Prototype

RM Sotherby's

Description:

This Lola B12/80 spent it’s entire competition life as part of the Mazda Factory IMSA Sportscar programme in the USA. Delivered as a new car to SpeedSource Race Engineering from Multimatic.

Initially starting life powered by a Mazda SkyActive 4 Cylinder diesel engine in 2014 and 2015 with limited success the decision was made to renew a previously successful partnership between Mazda and AER with their 2.0 4 Cylinder Turbo Petrol engine. Once again in 2016 the Mazda’s were front running cars in IMSA with season best results for car 70 of 4th place at COTA and Long Beach, 5th place at Watkins Glenn and Mosport/CTMP notably setting the cars fastest lap on lap 103/125 only .384 from the fastest lap of the race showing how consistent the cars pace was over a long distance.

As part of a factory programme the cars were developed and maintained regardless of cost and despite having been in ‘retirement’ since the end of 2016 after the disbandment of Speedsource in 2017, it was clearly evident on the cars arrival at Simpson Motorsport in the Spring of 2022.

The car then underwent an absolute nut and bolt disassembly with works including but not limited to all items required sent for crack testing, new fuel cell and internals, dampers and gearbox sent for service, rebuilt braking system, new Schroth seat belts and FEV extinguisher system. At the same time the car was also reunited with an AER 2.0T 4 Cylinder Engine along with all new oil, fuel and coolant lines etc. AER worked in collaboration with Simpson Motorsport to ensure a specification of engine as true to period as possible with some upgrades focussed around reliability and ease of running.

Come August after 15 passes of a runway on the Tuesday prior to the Silverstone Classic, the car was now run once again for the first time in anger in the Masters Endurance Legends races. The car ran faultlessly all weekend with a 3rd place overall finish on the Saturday followed by an outright win on the Sunday. It’s safe to say everyone involved in the recommissioning of the car were delighted with the result against the strongest MEL entry of the season. Team and driver both felt there was more to come from the car with a couple of decent days testing but proof that the car was this fast and user friendly out of the box was more the focus.

The car is now presented re-prepared and absolutely ready to win again in the 2023 Masters Europe or USA Series as well as being eligible for HSR Classic Sebring 12 hour and Classic Daytona 24 hour. Simpson Motorsport are happy to continue to prepare and run the car for it’s new owner in Masters Europe alongside their other Lola LMP customers. Assistance with worldwide shipping also available.
