For the 1977 Formula 1 season, March developed the 771 that would proudly sport new Rothmans livery. The 771 had slight upgrades compared to the outgoing 761 with a front-mounted radiator, a wider tub, longer wheelbase and lighter weight than previous models. It was powered by a 3-litre Cosworth DFV V-8 DOHC engine mated to a five-speed Hewland FG400 gearbox.

Chassis number 771-01 was first used as a practice car by Ian Scheckter at the 1977 Belgian Grand Prix held at Zolder. On 2 October 1977 its sister car, 771-02, crashed at the United States Grand Prix held a Watkins Glen. Parts from 771-01 and 771-02 were combined to form one car, numbered “771-1/2”. This car raced at the Canadian Grand Prix held at Mosport on 9 October 1977. With Ian Scheckter behind the wheel the car qualified 18th and retired after 29 laps due to engine issues. The car was due to race at the Japanese Grand Prix but visa complications would mean the car would not participate.

In 1979, the March was entered into a number of UK hill climb events by Roy Lane, taking 1st place on three occasions. The car was then purchased, restored and prepared for historic racing by Martin Stretton. It is believed that while referred to as “771-1/2” following its sister cars accident at Watkins Glen, this car still retained the chassis number 771-01. The car was then acquired by former Formula 3 driver, Giorgio Galvanin, who had the famous Mauro Pane prepare his car.

Today, chassis number 771-01 has an FIA Historical Technical Passport valid in racing for the period of 1977 to 1985. In 2001, all the relevant components made from magnesium and aluminium were inspected for corrosion and cracking. The car had over €7,500 spent on parts and labour in 2014 and 2015, receiving new driveshafts, yokes and CV joints, as well as work carried out on the Hewland FG400 gearbox.

Presented in its stunning Rothmans livery and retaining a Cosworth DFV engine and Hewland FG400 gearbox, this retired Formula 1 car is as striking and bold as it was in 1977.

Pour la saison 1977, Marche développa la 771 qui devait fièrement arborer la nouvelle livrée Rothmans. La 771 avait reçu quelques améliorations par rapport à la précédente 761 avec un radiateur monté à l’avant, une coque élargie, un empattement allongé et une masse réduite comparée aux modèles précédents. Elle était dotée d’un moteur Cosworth DFV V8 à 4 ACT accouplé à une boîte de vitesses Hewland FG-400 à cinq rapports.

Le châssis n° 771-01 fut d’abord utilisé comme mulet d’entraînement par Ian Scheckter au GP de Belgique 1977 couru à Zolder. Le 2 octobre 1977, la sister car 771-02 fut accidentée au Grand Prix des Etats-Unis à Watkins Glen. Des pièces de 771-01 et de 771-02 furent combinées pour reconstruire une seule voiture appelée « 771-1/2 ». Cette voiture courut le Grand Prix du Canada à Mosport le 9 octobre 1977. Avec Ian Scheckter au volant, elle partit en 18e position et abandonna après 29 tours sur problèmes de moteur. La voiture devait courir le GP du Japon mais des problèmes de visa l’en empêchèrent.

En 1979, la March fut engagée par Roy Lane dans diverses courses de côte au Royaume-Uni où elle prit trois fois la première place. La voiture fut rachetée, restaurée et préparée pour disputer des épreuves historiques par Martin Stretton. Toujours dénommée « 771-1/2 » après l’accident de sa sister car à Watkins Glen, la voiture a conservé le numéro de châssis 771-01. Elle fut ensuite achetée par l’ancien pilote de Formule 3, Giorgio Galvanin, qui la fit préparer par le réputé Mauro Pane.

Actuellement, le châssis n° 771-01 possède son passeport technique historique FIA valable pour la période 1977-1985. En 2001, toutes les pièces concernées en magnésium et en aluminium ont été inspectés en vue de détecter de la corrosion ou des amorces de fêlure. En 2014 et 2015, plus de €7 500 ont été dépensés en pièces et en main d’œuvre sur la voiture qui a reçu des arbres de transmission, des cardans et des étriers neufs, tandis que la boîte Hewland FG400 était rénovée.

Présentée sous les brillantes couleurs de Rothmans et toujours dotée de son moteur Cosworth DFV et de sa boîte Hewland FG400, cette ancienne F1 est aussi fascinante et performante qu’en 1977.
