1961 Sunbeam Alpine Series 11, 1600cc

Offered for sale is this stunning Sunbeam Alpine in fantastic condition. Prepared with no expense spared and painted in Seacrest Green with a white hard top to emulate the Works Sebring race cars of the period. Having a valid V5 registration document means this particular Alpine presents many opportunities to its new owner, everything from prestigious historic race meetings and road rally events to simple weekend blasts in the countryside, the car will do it all.

It was converted from an original road car into a race/road rally car by a professional historic race car engineer, there are stacks of build receipts dating back to 2011. The owner then raced the car in the HRDC series and was invited to race at the 73rd members meeting at Goodwood in which it was very well received. The current owner has raced the car in the HSCC Historic Road Sports series

The car performs well on track with a strong, clean, free revving engine, great handling and excellent brakes. Also fitted to the car is a set of Corbeau seats, Luke 4-point harnesses and a rev limiter. 

The cars history file comes not only with a huge stack of receipts and manuals for parts fitted but also the original registration document from 1961, the valid and current V5 Logbook (registration number XYV 999) and certificate of authenticity from the Rootes Group Trust which verifies the chassis number and registration of the vehicle.

The engine was put together by a well-regarded Rootes Group engine specialist, less than 40hrs of running time to its name since the build. The specification is as follows:

·         120 BHP @ 5500rpm on Twin SU Carburettors

·         Crankshaft Nitride and Balanced

·         Powermax Solid skirt flat top Pistons (H120 Type)

·         Rods, flywheel assembly lightened and balanced.      Roller spigot bush fitted

·         Holbay race spec cam shaft ground from H120 type  original

·         High performance oil pump 1725 type (Holbay) with  adjustable pressure relief valve

·         Holbay standard cylinder head modifications to “Hunter” head, ported and matched to new Stromberg inlet manifold

·         Sump baffle modifications to suit 1725 pump pick up

·         Alpine oil cooler mounted bellow radiator with removable blanking plates

·         Bespoke exhaust manifold

·         H120 type non vac advance distributor, Silver top electronic fuel pump and Filter king fuel pressure regulator

·         Rose jointed engine tie-bar

·         Later type long nose water pump, aluminium radiator with electric fan

Plus numerous other racing modifications to long to list

The car sits on a brand new set of Minilite wheels mounted with Yokohama AO48 tyres that have done one race meeting

Also included are a set of wire wheels mounted with Avon CR6ZZ tyres, ideal for wet conditions 

The gearbox is the correct 4 speed close ratio unit with a very useful overdrive in 3rd and 4th. The overdrive has been uprated with a competition clutch lining. The gearbox and overdrive assembly was assembled by ex Rootes Factory gearbox tech John Roseby.

The final drive is a 4.2 to 1 pinion/crown wheel ratio

As you can see from the photos, this is a rust free and very solid example in excellent condition and prepared to a high standard. The car starts on the button and runs beautifully. Its ready for its next owner and plenty of top flight driving events.
