The “Big Healey” rally cars, prepared by the BMC Competition Department, had an impressive CV with a great breadth of international victories under their belt. As the historic rally scene has grown, and with original BMC built cars rising sharply in value, Works-style recreations have become the weapon of choice for many serious competitors.
The example we have on offer is Roger Byford’s all-conquering competition BJ7 historic competition car 32EXT which is well-known with more than 40 years of European success in race and rally. Acquired by Roger and his wife Maggi in 1981 this original UK Right Hand Drive wind up window car was then converted for club racing, rallying and timed speed events , constantly updated throughout the 80’s on a no-expense spared basis the car was entered in its first International Event in 1988. Finishing a staggering seventh overall, Maggi and Roger were joined by 143 other entrants in the first ever RAC Classic Marathon. During the early 90’s the car was received a full chassis-up rebuild to “full works specification”.
This included the construction of all aluminium body work including doors, wings, boot, etc: side-exit exhaust and a limited-slip differential. Fitted with a newly rebuilt engine the car was returned to the race circuit once more, competing in the Healey Drivers International race series. Recording a highly commendable sixth overall and multiple class wins, sharing the track with motor racing royalty, namely John Chatham’s DD 300 and Denis Welsh’s much admired “Bulldog”. Others successes included finishes on the 1999 Lands End to John O’Groats, 1991 RAC Historic, 1990 Circuit Retro(Ireland), the infamous all-Healey race at Montihery , 1998 Classic Marathon Dash to Marrakech, Yorkshire Rally and many others.
Always capable of front running pace, it has over the last forty years, become one of the most well-known and admired machines both at home and overseas. It is without doubt the nearest thing there is to £500,000 works machine and has all the important contemporary history.
During 2019 the car was entrusted to marque specialists “Orchard Restorations” for a complete rebuild of the engine and running gear which cost £30,000 with the engine built to fast-road rally specification (200 BHP on dyno with sheets).
Recently the car has been sympathetically restored to a high standard including repaint, retrim, re chrome, replacement alloy trim , new glass , complete hard top restoration etc. etc. etc. Complete with an invoice file and extensive photographic file showing the car racing and rallying in period. £125,000
