Launched for the 1987 Formula One season, the Lotus 99T was equipped with Honda’s turbocharged 1.5-litre V6 engine, producing up to 900bhp.

It was also the second Lotus chassis to be fitted with electronic active suspension that kept the ride height flat through cambers and corners. The car proved to be very competitive, winning the Grand Prix that year in Monaco and Detroit in the hands of Ayrton Senna, and taking the Brazilian to third place overall in the World Drivers’ Championship.

This lot comprises a faithful replica of the 99T, which has been hand-built to a 1:1 scale, and finished in the yellow Camel tobacco livery. Its lightweight fibreglass bodywork features a neatly sculpted front wing, as well as a substantial wing at the rear.

There are large panel radiators in both side pods, and a metal roll hoop above the cockpit. Five-spoke centre-lock wheels are fitted, along with replica Goodyear Eagle slick tyres.

In the cabin, there is a bucket seat with black vinyl trim, a genuine Alcantara-trimmed Momo steering wheel, and a Reporter racing harness. The dashboard has been meticulously reproduced with dials and controls to mimic the original item in the 1987 race car.

As a rolling display car, there is no engine, no gearbox, and no driveline components fitted – and it would not be possible to make it a running car. However, the car has clearly been built to a high standard, and to the untrained eye looks every inch the period-correct F1 racer.

The cost of a real ex-Team Lotus 99T would of course be substantial, so this replica is a great opportunity to acquire a piece of motorsport automobilia for a fraction of that cost; which is bound to get people talking whether exhibited at home, in the reception area of a workshop or specialist, or at any number of international shows.
