1971 Datsun 510 Vintage Race Car, Former SCCA SF Region

Description:

This 1971 Datsun 510 was converted into a race car in the early 1970s and used in SCCA San Francisco Regional competitions through 1983, when it was parked for approximately 39 years by its previous owner. It was acquired by the seller in February 2022 and subsequently underwent a mechanical recommissioning before being raced at the Velocity Invitational at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in October 2022. A Rebello Racing-built 1.8L inline-four has been installed, and it is equipped with dual Mikuni 44mm carburetors with velocity stacks, a BRE intake manifold, a Stahl tubular header, a fuel cell, and MSD electronic ignition. Additional work during current ownership has reportedly involved installing a replacement five-speed dog-box manual transmission sorced from Troy Ermish, and a Nismo R180 limited-slip differential, as well as replacing the fuel cell bladder and pump, master cylinders, alternator, suspension bushings, brake components, and harnesses. The exterior is finished in yellow, and equipment includes a fiberglass BRE-style hood, fenders, and decklid, along with riveted rear fender flares, 13″ alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a modified suspension, a Sparco racing seat, fire suppression system, and Sun and Stewart Warner instrumentation. This 510 is now offered in California with spare and removed parts, a blue California license plate, historical images, a CSRG logbook, prior registration cards, service records, and a bill of sale.

This car is elidgible to run in the 2024 Velocity Invitational will feature a 1966-1979 Historic SCCA B&C Sedan, TransAm Under-2 Liter, 2.5L Challenge(HBC) run Group 6 at Sonoma Raceway on October 4-6, 2024.

 

The engine compartment is finished in gray and houses a 1.8-liter inline-four that was built by Rebello Racing of Antioch, California and was installed in February 2023, a ZERO hour, dyno time only Rebello engine. 

The engine features twin Mikuni 44mm carburetors with velocity stacks, a very rare and period correct BRE intake manifold, a Stahl tubular header, a re-cored radiator with an electric fan, an oil cooler, MSD electronic ignition, a Denso compactor alternator, a high-torque starter, and an ATL eight-gallon fuel cell. Additional work since 2022 is said to have included replacing the fuel cell bladder, fuel pumps, ignition coil and control box, starter, alternator, and battery.

Previously finished in facroty blue, the car was repainted yellow and fitted with a fiberglass BRE hood, decklid, and fenders during prior ownership. The bumpers and headlights have been removed and additional exterior details include a black front air dam, a cowl-mounted battery shutoff switch, a driver-side mirror, plexiglass side and rear windows, recovery hooks, hood and decklid pins, riveted rear wheel flares, and a single exhaust outlet. Photos in the gallery show track wear and blemishes around the body, including chips, cracks, and scratches. No external cosmetic restoration has been undertaken. This car shows the patina of race battles on track and is absolutely structurally sound in every way with just the slightest of rust bubbles about the size of a dime in the bottom of the rocker panels.

The most amazing thing about this car aside from it's two regional wins is that aside from the removed for lightness (front fenders, hood and trunk) NO BODY PANELS HAVE EVER BEEN REPLACED and the car retains all it's originial structure from 1971.

Yes, that's correct: in all it's racing career, the car was never shunted or crashed. It has original factory tub, and unibody construction.

This car is an excellent example of a true grass roots racer from the real B sedan Days and needs nothing but a new driver.
