BMW M635CSi E24 "GpA" Racecar
Description:
'Attack of the Sharknose', 1984 BMW M635CSi “GpA” Race Car.
Recently fully rebuilt – ready to race!
In the mid-1970s, BMW introduced the successor to the acclaimed E9 Coupé. The new model, penned by the influential French designer Paul Bracq, was designated the E24. Its distinctive lines and unmistakable front end quickly earned it nicknames like “Sharknose” and “Bayern Express.”
The M635CSi stood at the very top of the E24 range — the ultimate predator. While most versions were equipped with the capable M30 engine, the M635CSi received a serious upgrade in the form of BMW’s legendary M88 engine. This 3.5-liter inline-six with four valves per cylinder was originally developed for the BMW M1 and produced up to 286 hp, thanks in part to higher compression and revised ignition and injection systems. Another key difference: unlike regular E24 models, the M635CSi was exclusively developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH. In addition to the more powerful engine, the 635 received a reinforced 5-speed manual gearbox, revised suspension, and upgraded brakes. The battery was relocated to the rear to improve weight distribution and traction.
Unsurprisingly, the M635CSi achieved great success on racetracks worldwide. In Europe, it secured overall wins at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (1983, 1985, 1986) and the Nürburgring 24 Hours (1984 and 1985). Volker Strycek won the inaugural German Touring Car Championship (DTM) in 1984, while drivers such as Helmut Kelleners, Dieter Quester, and Roberto Ravaglia led the 635CSi to three European Touring Car Championship titles between 1983 and 1986. Outside of Europe, the car also claimed touring car championship success in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan in 1985.
The car we’re offering started life as a road car and was fully restored and prepared in 2007 as a semi Group A race car in the iconic Jägermeister livery. The German owner drove it only 800 gentle kilometers before selling it in 2011 to the current Dutch owner — a well-known collector and racer — who in 2018 commissioned a full Group A rebuild by Tim Tuning in the Netherlands. After completion, the car was finished in the lesser-known but highly attractive “Bob Jane T-Marts” livery, as used in the 1985 Australian championship.
