Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 ‘GTAM’ In the early 1970s, international touring car competitions focused on models with engines up to 2 litres. Following the success of the 1300 and 1600 GTA, Alfa Romeo entrusted Autodelta with the task of developing a new racing car based on the American GTV 1750 — hence the suffix ‘Am’. To comply with minimum weight regulations (900 kg), the GTAm used fibreglass front and rear bonnets, keeping the bodywork in steel, while the doors were made of aluminium. The aggressive look with wide rims and riveted mudguard extensions reinforced its competitive character. Although not part of the brand's official catalogue, Autodelta built and supplied components for competition cars. It was this model that led Alfa Romeo to victory in the European Touring Car Championship in 1971 and 1972. In the hands of drivers such as Andrea de Adamich, Toine Hezemans and Jochen Rindt, the featherweight GTAs dominated the ETCC. One of the most impressive results was Rindt's title win in the inaugural American Trans-Am championship, defeating rivals with larger V8 engines. In fact, GTAs appeared in touring car championships and hill climbs around the world, as well as famous road races such as the Tour de France Automobile and the Tara Florio. The GTA is arguably one of the most iconic and sought-after Alfa Romeos of the post-war era.
