1961 Ford Anglia 105E Period Race Car
The car was first registered as 709 CLF in June 1961. After 3 years of road use, it was bought by Jeff Howe (of Howe Exhausts, nr. Brands Hatch) and converted to a race car in 1964. It was raced by Jeff and others during the 1965 season. After a period of storage, the car was raced again in the late 1980s by Nick Rumney and again in the 2000s by Bill Withey. In current ownership it was raced in the CSCC Swinging Sixties series for the 2012 season. The history of the car is supported by a box file of scrutineering tickets, race programmes and old copies of Autosport. The car also comes with it’s original buff registration document and owners handbook although the registration is no longer live on the DVLA system.
The car has a highly original and rust free bodyshell with period modifications to reduce weight to approx. 750Kg. These include period glassfibre panels for bonnet, bootlid and passenger door and perspex side windows and rear screen.
Currently fitted with a 1500 pre-crossflow, full race engine built by Throbnozzle racing. Running on twin 45 DCOEs and with electronic ignition it produces 127BHP.
Drivetrain consists of a twin plate racing clutch with concentric actuator, straight cut close ratio 2000E gearbox and LSD.
Front suspension consists of LEDA front struts with adjustable spring platforms and damping. The car has a modified front crossmember and track control arms to increase camber. The rear is lowered and the axle is located by anti-tramp bars and a panhard rod with adjustable lever arm dampers.
Braking is via AP Racing 4 pot calipers and vented discs at the front and RS2000 drums at the rear.
An alloy fuel tank and electric fuel pump are fitted in the boot.
Safety equipment including a full roll cage, electrical safety cut out switch, Willans seat belts and plumbed in fire extinguisher. Note: seat belts and fire extinguisher are no longer ‘in date’ and will need replacing before racing.
Varley Red Top racing battery.
Auxiliary gauges: Revcounter, Oil pressure & temperature, Coolant temperature.
Last raced in 2012. Dry stored since. Re-commissioned/serviced and used on a track-day at Cadwell Park in Dec 2024 with no issues (see photos). Just requires new seat belts, fire extinguisher and fresher tyres to be ready to race again!
Easy to drive and maintain. A great ‘starter’ car for someone wishing to join the thriving historic racing scene or an opportunity for a Ford enthusiast to get it back on track and add to it’s 50 years of racing history. Eligible for the CSCC Swinging Sixties series ‘as-is’ or for other series e.g. CTCRC Pre66 Classic Saloon & Historic Touring Cars with minimal modifications.
Note: a steel passenger door and bonnet (both requiring some restoration – see photos) and an original front cross member and steering box are available with the car along with a spare set of Minilight wheels and some other spares.
