History

The Austin Healey 100 was introduced at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1952, to huge critical acclaim. Production ran from 1953 to 1956. Approximately 85% of all 100 production was exported, with around 80% going to America. In period many were used as weekend race cars in countries all over the world, where they regularly punched well above their weight in sports car races. This Car

GSU was originally shipped to America in 1954.  She was reimported into the UK as a good standard road car in the early 1980’s. She was converted into a race car & supported by Denis Welch. In the early 1990’s she was re-exported to America as a very successful race car & raced there for the next 10 years. She was then re-imported into the UK as a rather tired old race car. The restoration was started by John Harper & Tony Ditheridge, but stalled when another project took priority.

Woolmer Classic Engineering acquired GSU on behalf of a client & completed the race preparation in 2014. Raced by our client for 3 years, with much success. GSU was restored by WCE for a second time following a racing accident, with a new chassis fitted, utilising the original bulkheads & most of the outer panels. The new chassis has substantially improved the car’s handling. Acquired by the current owner in 2021 & raced sparingly since, including Goodwood Members Meeting, Silverstone Festival, MRL Woodcote Trophy, Equipe Classic Racing 50’s & FISCAR.

GSU is very well known in racing circles & a competitive FIA specification race car.

The specification includes:

·         The engine is a full specification Woolmer Classic Engineering unit with steel crank & rods, high compression forged pistons, alloy full race cylinder head, WCE full race camshaft & alloy sump. Nine hours running time since being rebuilt. Capacity checked & sealed.

·         The gearbox is a BN2 unit with straight cut, close ratio Sebring ratio gear set & a competition overdrive. Both the gearbox & differential were rebuilt in 2021 by Hardy Engineering & have only nine hours running time since

·         The rear axle has race half shafts fitted.

·         Carburation is from twin 1 ¾” H6 SU's, fitted with a WCE race cold air box.

·         The exhaust is a full race side exit system.

·         Pre-engaged high torque starter motor.

·         Dynator alternator is fitted.

·         The bodywork is all aluminium, it was re-painted in 2021 & is in very good condition inside & out.

·         Dunlop front disc brakes, BN2 rear drum brakes, race brake linings.

·         High ratio steering box with safety column.

·         100ltr alloy foam filled fuel tank.

·         Twin Facet fuel pumps.

·         Twin aero screens & two matching period style modern bucket seats.

·         Race FHR harness expires 31/12/2028

·         Hand held fire extinguisher requires a service.

·         WCE specification roll bar with side impact door bar.

·         The car is currently fitted with a set of almost new 72 spoke wheels with good Avon CR6 ZZ road tyres. There are also a spare set of 72 spoke wheels, one set fitted with used Dunlops Racing tyres.
