Callaway Corvette LM-GT Chassis #LM95-003
Description:
Callaway Corvette LM-GT Chassis #LM95-003
After establishing himself as the premier tuner/ constructor of high performance Corvettes Reeves Callaway set a goal of bringing the Corvette back to LeMans. Along with Ernst Worhl he formed Callaway Competion in Germany and in 1994 built the first Callaway LM based on the Corvette C4. Callaway supplied the engine utilizing an all aluminum NASCAR block and heads and his internals , modifications and tuning. Designed for endurance racing, it developed 450 reliable HP. The body was redesigned by Paul Deutschman to reduce high speed drag. At its first outing at LeMans in 1994 the car captured the GT2 pole but was a DNF running out of fuel on track.
Rocky Augusta, heir to the Augusta motorcycle and helicopter fortune , was competing against it in 1994 in a Venturi . He was so impressed by the car ( which was pitted next to him) he decided to purchase two cars on the condition that The car weight not exceed 1100 kilos. Rocky felt the car had great V8 power but was too heavy.
To achieve that target , a new lightweight car was fabricated from specially produced lightweight components sourced with cooperation of GM. Chassis #002 and #003 were sold to Augusta Racing and the fourth car was sold to Sweitz racing. Chassis #003 won the pole in GT2 at LeMans in 1995 and finished 3rd in class and 11th overall. This car had Extensive history in BPR series 1995-1997. Raced Daytona in 1996 and then entered in GT2 in Speed/Pirelli World Challenge. Chassis -003 with Almo Copelli driving won the series after winning first three races and 5 podiums in 9 races.
This is the inky only car converted to wide body configuration, with wider track, wheels and revised bodywork. Raced Daytona, LeMans and BPR in 1997 with limited results due to ongoing problems with Dunlop tire failures.
Almo Copelli took ownership of the car at the end of the 1997 season when the team disbanded. Current owner acquired in 2018 and completed a bare frame restoration in 2022 . Car retains Callaway engine #001 which received a complete rebuild at PME engines in Moorseville, NC. Track testing completed at RoadAtlanta and Daytona. Ready to race with some spares but more importantly a set of body molds and spare body with correct LeMans livery. Received an FIA passport #GB81144 in 2010.
Selected as one of the 11 most significant Corvette Race cars for display at the Peterson museum in 2023-2024.
This is one of the rarest Callaway Corvettes - a true 1 of 1 with great history. Compete bare frame restoration with only limited test miles since. The car is fast, easy to drive and will be competitive in any historic race series in the US or Europe. Has a FIA Passport dated 2010 that will need to be updated.
