March F1 701/09 original 1970

Description:

The March 701 chassis 701/09 is one of the least-raced examples of the March customer Formula One cars built for the 1970 season. Below is a concise historical summary of this specific chassis.

Overview

    •             Model: March 701

    •             Chassis: 701/09

    •             Year built: 1970

    •             Engine: Ford Cosworth DFV V8 (3.0 L)

    •             Designer: Robin Herd

    •             Manufacturer: March Engineering

The March 701 was the company’s first Formula One car, introduced for the 1970 season and built in 11 chassis. It became the most widely used F1 chassis of that year.

Chassis History – March 701/09

1. Hubert Hahne (1970)

First owner: German racing driver and BMW dealer

Hubert Hahne

    •             Purchased the car in 1970 for roughly £18,000 / 160,000 DM.

    •             Entered it for the 1970 German Grand Prix.

    •             Attempted qualification at Hockenheimring.

Result:

    •             Failed to qualify.

Hahne publicly criticized the car, claiming it had mechanical and setup problems and was not properly prepared. A test in Silverstone with Ronnie Peterson achieving a 2sec faster time than in his own car ended the dispute between Mosley and Hahne .

After this unsuccessful attempt the car was not raced again in 1970.

2. Jean-Pierre Jarier (1971)

In 1971 the car was loaned or rented by Hahne to the young French driver

Jean-Pierre Jarier.

Race appearances

    1.           1971 International Gold Cup – Oulton Park

       •             Entered by either Goodwin Racing Services or Hahne.

       •             Qualified last.

       •             Finished but was not classified.

    2.           1971 Italian Grand Prix – Monza

       •             Entered by Shell Arnold Team.

       •             Jarier qualified last.

       •             Finished 12th, but not classified due to distance from the winner.

This was historically significant because it was the last Formula One World Championship race entered by a March 701

3. Later Historic Career

After its brief period history:

    •             The car remained with Hubert Hahne for some time.

    •             Later sold to German historic racer Erwin Derichs, who raced it extensively in historic FIA Formula One events.

    •            Acquired by an Austrian historic racer by Mr Alth who raced in Monaco Histroic Grandprix 2008 and drove till 2010 in the Masters Series to win the CLass A.

The F1 is in good condition as last raced in 2010.

The original engine Cosworth DFV long stroke is running but needs to be overhauled.

Gearbox Hewland 300 needs to be overhauled. FIA HTP from 2008 needs be done including all safety equiment like fules cell, x-ray, belts and so. Some gear ratios and second set of wheels are coming with the car!

A great opportunity to buy an original F1 and an entry card to the Historic Monaco Grand Prix!
