The Appeal

To build the 360 Modena’s racing kudos and enable owners to experience the car’s full capabilities, Ferrari created a one-make race series. And, naturally, there was a purpose-built car, the 360 Challenge, in which to compete. These cars got weight saving measures that cut reduced weight to just 1,170kg -compared to the road car's 1,450kg - plus improved aerodynamics. Quicker and more biddable than their road-going cousins, these cars are the cream of the 360 range. 

The track cars should not be confused with the more populous road-going 360 Challenge Stradale. Just 300 or so of this track-only racer were built between 1999 and 2005. This car was built in 2003 and campaigned by Kessel, the prominent Swiss Ferrari racing team, which has run several 360 Challenge cars. 

There is not much paperwork documenting the racing history, but it retains its Kessel decals and Ferrari Challenge roundels. It is in good  general order, bearing just a few minor cosmetic racing marks, ones that arguably add to its character. It retains its Challenge features, including roll cage, Lexan perspex side windows, roll cage and fire suppression system.

The Condition

• Factory-correct 360 Challenge specification 
• Rosso Corsa paintwork with racing decals and central white stripe
• Paintwork in good general order with scuffs and marks due to racing experience
• Minor bubbling to note around door lock in photos 
• Fitted with BBS alloys in fair condition with some kerbing to note 
• Stripped racing interior with black roll cage and fire suppression system 
• Digital dashboard in working order as shown 
• Charcoal suede dashboard with red stitching in good condition 
• Red suede OMP racing seat in good order with ‘Kessel Racing’ stitching 
• Lexan Perspex side windows with sliding vent to both sides 
• Carbon interior trim to centre console as shown 

This is a working race car, so it isn’t perfect. Finished in Rosso Corsa with central white stripe and racing roundels, it is factory correct and sits on BBS centre lock alloys. The interior has been stripped and features a roll cage, fire suppression unit and OMP red suede racing seat with Kessel Racing stitching. There is a working digital dashboard display as shown. 

The Mechanics

• 3,586cc F141 ‘Dino’ V8 engine delivering around 410bhp 
• 6spd ‘Graziano’ F1-style automatic gearbox 
• 0-60 mph in 3.9 secs
• 100 litre fuel tank 

Mechanically the standard 360 Modena and the race car have much in common, but the beyond the shared 3.6L ‘Dino’ V8 and 6spd Graziano F1-style gearbox the Challenge hides some significant changes. Power is increased marginally by 10-25bhp over the standard car’s 400bhp, but it is in lightening the car, from 1450kg to 1,170kg, that the difference truly shines. Shedding weight makes the Challenge one second faster to 60mph - down to 3.9secs - and considerably more agile and direct. 

This car was prepared and raced by Swiss Ferrari race specialist Kessel throughout its life.
