The Aston Martin DBS marked a significant evolution for the marque when it was introduced in 1967, conceived as the successor to the long-lived Aston Martin DB6. Designed by the great William Towns and unveiled at Blenheim Palace on 25 September 1967, the DBS was the final model developed during the David Brown era and the last to feature Tadek Marek’s famed 4.0-litre DOHC straight-six engine. Beneath its sharper, more modern and muscular styling lay an evolution of traditional Aston Martin engineering, combining a wider track and improved chassis dynamics with the marque’s hallmark refinement. Powerful engines, innovative chassis design, and an elegant yet purposeful silhouette have since helped the DBS cement itself as one of Aston Martin’s most desirable models of the period.
The DBS also occupies an important place in popular culture, becoming only the second Aston Martin to feature in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, where it starred alongside George Lazenby in his sole outing as James Bond — a one-off appearance for both actor and car, with another Aston Martin not appearing in the series again for a further 18 years. Available with either manual or automatic transmission, just 317 right-hand-drive examples were specified with the now highly desirable manual gearbox, further enhancing the model’s collectability today.
Manufactured on 6 March 1969, chassis DBS/5306/R was specified in the attractive Dubonnet Rosso, complemented by a Black Connolly leather interior. Factory options included power-assisted steering, a Radiomobile radio, Avon tyres, black carpets, and a 3.71:1 Powr-Lok differential.
Supplied new via A&B Cars of Lancashire to its first owner in Bolton, the car was invoiced at £3,744, plus purchase tax of £1,432 5s 10d. Believed to be one of just 317 right-hand-drive manual cars built over the model’s short three-year production run, this example represents a particularly rare and desirable specification. By 1974, it had been exported to Bob Rusk — a serial Aston Martin collector, Tickford associate, and later Aston Martin distributor in New South Wales, Australia — and would remain in and out of his ownership for some time. He later sold it to B. Ireland, and subsequently to Penrite Oil Co. for company representative Gavin Campbell, to whom he also sold a V8 at around the same time. The car spent time in Victoria and Tasmania before being sold through Brooklands Cars in November 2002 to Mark Wheatley, and once again by Brooklands in 2015. By this time, the car had been subject to a complete restoration and was reputedly regarded by Aston Martin Works as one of the best examples available.
Returning to the UK, DBS/5306/R was subsequently sold through Aston Martin Works, Newport Pagnell, and remained with its new owner for seven years until being acquired by the current owner through the Classic Motor Hub, Bibury, in March 2023. The car travelled with him to the Netherlands and has since been thoroughly enjoyed. Now offered for sale simply due to lack of use, this wonderful Aston was driven by the owner back to the UK to be sold by Klasiko — a testament to his confidence in the car.
Accompanying the vehicle is a small leather Aston Martin lever-arch file, which includes copies of Aston Martin records detailing build information, previous ownership, and more. Also present is a collection of paperwork including previous invoices, shipping documents, the current V5C, and sundry items. A factory-correct DBS instruction booklet is also included.
Overall, this represents an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a UK-supplied, manual example of this charming motor car, presented in a highly attractive colour combination and benefitting from a restoration of a standard deemed worthy of sale by Aston Martin Works themselves.
