OVERVIEW

The present full-scale maquette represents an extraordinary and highly significant artifact from the development of the Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, one of the most advanced and iconic machines of the Group B era.

Executed at a true 1:1 scale, it was conceived not as a display object but as a working design tool, intended to define, evaluate, and refine the car’s proportions, surfaces, and aerodynamic characteristics. As such, it stands at the intersection of engineering, design, and prototyping, capturing the transition from conceptual study to physical form.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Introduced in 1985, the Lancia Delta S4 was developed as Lancia’s ultimate response to the rapidly evolving demands of Group B rallying. Conceived under the internal designation SE038, the car featured a highly sophisticated architecture, including a lightweight spaceframe chassis, mid-mounted engine, four-wheel drive, and the innovative twincharging system combining supercharger and turbocharger.

To comply with FIA homologation regulations, Lancia produced a limited run of approximately 200 road-going examples. The resulting Delta S4 Stradale was not derived from the standard production Delta, but rather represented a refined and detuned version of the competition car itself. Retaining its essential mechanical layout while offering improved usability and interior finish, it remains one of the closest road-legal interpretations of a pure Group B machine ever built.

DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN

The maquette was initiated in March 1983, following the launch of the SE038 (STUDIO ESPERIENZA N. 038) programme, and completed in September of the same year—placing it at a remarkably early and decisive stage in the car’s development.

The design process, overseen by Bruno Giardino, is comprehensively documented through an important archive of original prototype drawings, preserved in the original folder issued by Giardino and addressed to engineers Massimello and Limone.

The final rendering depicts the car in blue, a deliberate choice intended to enhance the perception of volume and surface articulation. This directly influenced the physical model, which was initially finished in dark blue. Traces of this original paint remain visible today, notably on the chassis plate marked SE038 000, and were further confirmed during restoration.

The maquette is constructed on a tubular frame, incorporating a central wooden core that defines the cockpit volume and supports the development of the body surfaces.

A particularly significant feature lies in the asymmetry between the two sides of the body, which preserve alternative design solutions:

•    The right-hand side features a smaller door glass with an external sliding mechanism and a more tapered rear side window;

• The left-hand side presents a taller door glass with an internal sliding system and a longer rear side window.

The right-hand configuration was ultimately selected for its more harmonious proportions.

Notably, the model lacks the definitive “S4” badging seen on production cars. At this stage, the final commercial designation had not yet been established, and the project still retained its internal prototype identity as “DELTA 4X4”.

To enhance realism, the maquette was equipped with a functional electrical wiring system, allowing both front and rear lights to be illuminated.

During a visit to Cecomp, Vittorio Ghidella famously remarked that the car “looked like a nun” (“pare un mugna”), referring to the prominent rear air intakes.

REDISCOVERY AND PROVENANCE

Following the completion of its development role, the maquette was stored in a facility in Chivasso, later used as a depot for Alfa Corse.

In 2003, during the dispersal of materials associated with the Alfa Romeo competition department, the model was rediscovered and sold as part of the remaining assets. It was subsequently acquired by Tony Fassina.

At the time of its rediscovery, the maquette had been repainted in white, suggesting that it may have been reused as a reference model for the development of body moulds for the Stradale version.

RESTORATION

In a decision guided by historical integrity and prestige, the complete restoration was entrusted to Cecomp—the same company that originally constructed the maquette for Abarth in 1983.

The work was carried out using a strictly conservative methodology, preserving both the physical authenticity and the historical stratification of the object. The re-emergence of original blue paint residues confirmed the maquette’s initial configuration.

PRESENT CONDITION AND ACCOMPANYING ITEMS

The maquette is preserved in a state of remarkable integrity, retaining all defining structural and morphological characteristics of its original function.

It remains fitted with its original wheels, complete with Pirelli P Zero tyres derived from the Lancia 037 Stradale.

To enhance realism during its operational life, the maquette was equipped with a functional electrical wiring system, allowing both front and rear lights to be illuminated.

The lot is accompanied by:

•    The original archive of design drawings by Bruno Giardino;

•    A set of Speedline wheels corresponding to the definitive Stradale configuration, fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres developed for that application.

This full-scale maquette represents a unique and irreplaceable witness to the genesis of the Lancia Delta S4. Combining experimental design, engineering validation, and exceptional provenance, it offers a rare opportunity to acquire a foundational artifact from one of the most advanced and influential rally cars ever produced.
