Audi Coupé B2 GT Gruppe 2

Description:

In March 1980, the Audi Coupé was presented in Paris, based on the Audi 80 (B2). A look at the specifications of the production model quickly made it clear that the car was ideally suited for Group 2 circuit racing. Only a few modifications to the standard model were required to convert the production car's body into a race car. Moreover, the available engine range was extremely suitable for tuning. With the support of Audi Motorsport, private teams and tuning companies such as Bergmeister, Kilian, Nothelle, Dupré, and Seikel entered race cars based on the Audi Coupé in various national and European racing series. The Audi Renn-Coupé GT appeared on the starting grid for the first time in 1981 and was an absolute pioneer of Audi's circuit racing.

This legendary race car, which is for sale, was originally built in collaboration between tuner Nothelle and sponsor Kamei, under contract and with the support of Audi Motorsport, and authorized by the then Audi chief Walter Treser. The driver for the 1981 season was the German Bernd Lilier. This bodywork is a lightweight body of which Audi produced only a few. This was the first Audi touring car to win a race in the German DRM championship. Norbert Haug wrote in the magazine Auto, Motor und Sport: "Audi Coupé in Race Version: the strongest and fastest front-drive car in the world." Kraftwerk, this competition version was developed and built by the Nothelle team in 70 days in 1981, features a 2.0-liter inline five-cylinder engine, and is equipped with a mechanical Bosch/Kugelfischer pump for fuel injection, capable of squeezing out 240 bhp. The engine was built and tuned in 1981 by Henri Lotterer, father of André Lotterer, a three-time 24h Le Mans winner. In its debut year in the DRM season, this Audi achieved two outright victories at Zolder and the Norisring. After its first season in the 1981 DRM championship, the car was sold and successfully entered in sprint races in Belgium for several years, winning many trophies.

In 2011, the car underwent a 'body-off' restoration, an intensive project in which the car was completely disassembled down to the bare chassis. Every part was overhauled, replaced, or restored, resulting in a car that is in absolutely historically accurate condition. In 2014, this car received an invitation to participate in the Festival of Speed at Goodwood.
