Frank Grimaldi’s Historic 1968 Trans Am Camaro

Description:

Frank Grimaldi's 1968 Trans Am Chevrolet Camaro

A genuine period race Camaro with the pedigree, authenticity and race-winning pace to stand out on any historic grid.

At its heart is a race-built Chevrolet 302 V8 featuring a bespoke cowl induction system and competition four-speed transmission. Revving to an astonishing 8,200rpm, it delivers the razor-sharp response and raw character that made the Trans-Am era legendary. Quite simply, this is one of the loudest and most visceral historic race cars we've ever encountered.

The authenticity of "Old #80" is beyond question. In 1972, the car became only the fifth Camaro awarded an official SCCA Trans-Am Brass Tag (#72-AS-05) at Lime Rock, a distinction it still carries today. Further recognition followed in 1993 when it receivedSVRA Historic Race Car Medallion #6-0204, which remains fitted to the car.

Its competition record is equally impressive. Between 1971 and 2021, Frank Grimaldi campaigned Old #80 in 265 SCCA and vintage races, achieving 238 finishes (90%), 110 podiums (42%) and 40 victories (15%). Highlights include:

  • 1971 & 1972 SCCA North Atlantic Road Racing Championship Runner-Up
  • 1973 SCCA Northeast Division National Champion
  • Winner, Historic Trans-Am, Lime Rock (1993)
  • Skip Barber Vintage Spirit Cup, Lime Rock Vintage Festival (1997)
  • Multiple Historic Trans-Am podiums and victories
  • Track Record Holder, Watkins Glen Long Course (HRG5)
  • Historic Race Group Championship podium finisher
  • Multiple Thompson Speedway overall and class victories

Most recently, professional racer Abbie Eaton demonstrated that Old #80 remains as competitive today as ever, taking pole position for Race One and outright victory in Race Two (from 13th place) at Brands Hatch Speedfest, with a handful of laps under her belt, she clocked a 52.103 lap – a second faster than her nearest finisher in a 30 car grid, proving this historic Camaro still has the pace to run at the front.

This is a car that could obtain FIA papers using itself as reference vehicle.
