Description:

This car was joyfully aquired in 2018 by a senior retired race car driver by winning bid on bringatrailer. Soon after due to multiple surgeries and declining health the car was never raced again. It was briefly driven on 2 different california tracks for a total of less than 1.5 hours.

The family is now liquidating the estate and the car must find a new owner or race team. Best offer above or below asking price will be accepted. Starting Asking price is $21,695 Euro ($25,000 USD).

This 1963.5 Ford Galaxie 500 race car was built in 2001-2002 as a tribute to the Wood Brothers stock car that Tiny Lund drove to victory in the 1963 Daytona 500. The car was raced in vintage oval races between 2003-2008 and then stored until 2015 when it was purchased by the previous owner, a professional road and desert racer. It has since been prepared for road racing and contested 15 additional vintage events with 10 class wins and no DNFs. Power is from a 358ci Windsor V8 which has logged approximately 20 hours since it was rebuilt and installed by the seller’s team and is currently paired with a face-plated Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. Other features include a NASCAR-style roll cage, weight jackers, upgraded brakes, 34-gallon fuel cell, remote fire suppression system, power steering, and more. The car is said to be eligible for Historic Sportscar Racing Group 6 events as well as the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association Group 6 exhibition class.  Two binders of race results and setup notes from 2003 to 2018, and an Arizona bill of sale.

The 1963.5 body features the lower fastback roofline introduced in 1963 to improve aerodynamics and is mounted to a square 1968 Ford stock car chassis. The stock steel bumpers, hood, and trunk lid have been replaced with fiberglass items and the removed panels are included with the sale. The full passenger side of the car was repainted prior to its most recent race in July 2018. The seller notes the body shows marks commonly incurred while racing, and that competing in the rain in both recent events has left surface rust visible on some exposed areas which can be seen in the photo gallery below. Several other close-ups showing cosmetic condition can be seen in the gallery below.

The livery duplicates that of the Wood Brothers car driven to victory by Tiny Lund in the 1963 Daytona 500. Lexan front, rear, and side windows have been installed along with a helmet fan. The brakes have been upgraded using Kelsey-Hayes calipers and discs up front along with single-piston calipers and discs in the rear. According to the previous owner the car set-up can be adjusted with weight jackers and a wide range of springs and AFCO shocks of various compression and rebound. Remote and separate brake and clutch master cylinders are also used, along with driver adjustable brake bias.

A roll cage with driver-side protection is integrated from front to back and listed among the safety features approved or required by HSR to race in Group 6. A remote fire suppression system is installed as well as an up-to-date safety harness. A 34-gallon Fuel Safe fuel cell was installed in 2017 to provide larger capacity for enduro racing.

The 358ci Windsor V8 was reportedly built to SCCA GT2 Panoz Esperante specifications with a wet sump and Accusump oil accumulator, and was rebuilt just before it was installed by SL Racing prior to the 2017 season. The engine is said to have run approximately 18-20 hours, and a compression test following its last race reportedly yielded values ranging from 178 to 190 psi. The car is currently set up for road racing with a face-plated Tremec 5-speed manual transmission but has also run with the 4-speed toploaders.

The car is said to weigh 3,250 pounds dry and starts races at just under 3,500 pounds including the fuel and driver with 49% rear weight bias and 49.98% cross weight. The previous owners team completed a 400-hour rebuild and race preparation in June 2018 prior to participation in its last two events.

Included are a current HSR logbook and two binders with race results and detailed race setup sheets from 2003 to July 2018. The car has completed 15 vintage road races with the seller and his teammate including three one-hour enduro events, and has reportedly been invited to participate in the HSR Classic 24-Hour race at Daytona. Other achievements include:

  • Lap time of 1:39.9 at Mid-Ohio with a top speed of 137 mph
  • Lap time of 2:40.3 at Road America with a top speed of 139 mph
  • Participated in approximately 17 vintage oval races with the previous owner between 2003 and 2008
  • Selected as poster car for the 43rd Annual Iola Old Car Show in Wisconsin in 2015 (original poster included in sale; copy shown in gallery)
  • Selected for 2018 WeatherTech Race Car Concours Event for display on Osthoff grass
  • Selected by Hagerty as one of 10 favorite cars out of more than 400 at the 2018 WeatherTech International Challenge at Road America
  • Parade car at Brickyard 400 while with the original owner/Builder
  • First place in Special Competition category at 2004 SAAC National Event at Michigan International Raceway (trophy shown in gallery)
  • Featured in “Flashback” section of October 2018 issue of Speedway Illustrated (shown in gallery).
