OVERVIEW

Alfa Romeo – the name will conjure a reaction from any automobile enthusiast in the world. Founded at the turn of the 20th century, and with a long string of motorsport and road model achievement, the brand is steeped in rich history. Success in Formula One, Sports Car Racing, and Rallying, led to a wonderful series of Italian designed and engineered road cars that created a cult following for the marque.

In terms of postwar Alfa models from the 1950s and 1960s, the Giulietta and Giulia examples must be amongst the most well-known and produced. The Spider, Sprint and Sprint Speciale Giulias were all introduced together with the Giulia sedan in 1962. They were effectively rebadged and updated versions of earlier Giulietta models, now with a 1600 instead of a 1300 engine. This late 1962 build (1963 model year) Alfa here has the best of both worlds – the sexy early Giulietta body (Bertone designed), with the larger 1600 engine, and the later rear end.

This little Alfa has caused quite a stir since arriving here – all in a good way. Numerous people recognized the car and have reached out to help provide input and history on the car. The car has been actively, and successfully, campaigned for over two decades as a vintage racer; almost exclusively under the care of a single support team.

With extensive records dating back to the early 1990s, primary support and service has been handled by Vintage Racing Motors (VRM) of Redmond, WA. VRM has overseen all maintenance, trackside, support, and the engine rebuilds. The records include service work, track set-up details for different courses, and show the full history of the most recent three owners.

The current engine rebuild is fresh. It has only dyno and tuning time after being installed in the car – it has not yet seen a race weekend. Sporting a Veloce spec (twin Weber 45 sidedraft carburetors), the dyno sheets show a healthy 132 HP at the wheels. Full engine build and tuning details are in the records that come with the car. A lovely exhaust header exits to a side exhaust just under the driver’s door. Power is sent through a very low hour Alfa Romeo GTA close ratio 5-speed transmission (with lightened gears) to a welded rear diff.

According to the official data in the records, the Alfa weighs just 2,006 lbs. without driver. Sitting on Koni shocks and sporting 15”x6” Panasport wheels shod in Hoosier Vintage 5.00-15 tires, the Sprint has just the right look to it, while remaining eligible for most vintage organizations. A Fuel Safe cell is located in the trunk flor along with a custom battery box.

Seats are supplied by Sparco in blue cloth as well as the six-point harnesses. The rest of the interior is clean and tidy, with a full roll cage, an onboard fire extinguisher, Accusump tank, and the bare minimum of switchgear.  Gauges are all clean, clear, and easy to read to keep an eye on the engine while on track.

The car has been in dry storage for the last few seasons, and will need new tires, harness belts (timed out), battery, and an overall track safety inspection, but otherwise ready to go racing. The current owner has enjoyed the car for many years and events, and a personal highlight was racing it at the Monterey Historic Reunion in 2011.

Offered on a clean and clear WA title, this 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 1600 comes with three large binders of invoices and car information, log book, a spare set of wheels, and a small assortment of spare parts.
