Tyre changer and wheel balancer - SOLD

Description:

Selling a tyre changer and wheel balancer as a pair. I regret that I can't split them at the moment, at least for a while, as I feel like they'll sell better as a pair.

Automotech AS-24SA air / electric tyre changing machine with bead breaker. Comes with:

  • Three tyre bars
  • Tub of tyre soap & application brush
  • Spare valves
  • Valve tool
  • Air inflation gauge built in
  • Bead breaker on the side of the unit as is the norm
  • A couple of plastic rim protectors

This machine requires a decent air supply, as well as a 13amp socket. The rotary table is electric, whereas the jaws and the bead breaker are air powered. You could power the jaws from a relatively small compressor but the bead breaker does require significantly more air or you'll be standing around waiting a bit.

The air supply connection is a standard quick release fitting (PCL I think).

I used to use this machine for swapping cheap slicks over when I did a lot of track days, and I bought it from new, so it's had pretty limited use in reality.

The jaws can grip on both outside of the rim (preferred) or inside of the rim. It'll do up to 24 inch wheels but you have to switch to internal gripping for the larger stuff (above 21" I think).

 

The wheel balancer is a Unite U-108 hand spin electronic model. It measures the balance electronically but you just spin the wheel by hand to initiate the balancing process. This makes it very compact and is ideal if you have limited space.

  • Requires 240v single phase mains to work
  • Allows you to select where the weights will be placed (inside, outside of rim, stick on type, etc)
  • Entry for wheel size and distance from the balancer (via measuring device on the side of the unit)
  • Electronically shows you where to place the weights, and how much, by rotating the wheel by hand after the balance check.
  • It has a foot brake near the floor to hold the wheel still 
  • There is a 100g calibration weight with it, although I have never actually used it as I never felt it needed calibrating i.e. I was getting good balance from it already (and I didn't have a steel wheel to put the calibration weight on anyway!).
  • Comes with a range of balancing cones. These alone are worth quite a lot of money if you look at prices on eBay.
  • Comes with an almost new pack of stick on weights

The balancer needs to be bolted to the floor. I have it screwed to a wooden shed floor with large screws, which is adequate, but the firmer the better really. There's a useful youtube video showing how the balancer works here, complete with cheesy music:

The balancer does have some minor issues, but none of them stop it from working:

  • The top black plastic casing is broken at the back
  • The spring loaded measuring device which is used to determine the distance of the edge of the rim to the machine is damaged on the end. This does not affect balancing as the measurement isn't that critical and it will only be 5mm or so different (you can account for it anyway if you so wish - it's fairly obvious by comparing with what's happening in the video).
  • The keypad used for entering parameters failed on it last year. I replaced it with a generic keypad as I knew a replacement would not be viable from a cost perspective. You can still access all of the functions but need to use a cheat sheet so that you know which button on the new keypad carries out which function.

 

Due to the weight, these items are collection only. The balancer is not all that heavy, but the tyre changer is. I can separate it into two parts for you to make it easier to manage, but even so the base will still require 2 people to lift it. If you are by yourself I can lift it with an engine crane for you, and I have a trolley to move it around on.

Note that you must transport the balancer carefully as it has some sensitive components inside it. I wouldn't recommend slinging it in the back of a trailer.
