After making his grand prix debut in 1972, Jody Scheckter would not race full-time in the top flight for another two years. That allowed the South African to split his time between a variety of categories, including heading to America to contest the SCCA L&M Formula 5000 season in 1973. While F5000 did not carry quite the same profile as F1, the use of large-capacity V-8s and well-developed tyres meant there was little to split the two series in terms of outright car performance.

Utilising design aspects of the McLaren M21, the T101 marked the first in-house design for Trojan, having spent much of the previous decade constructing race cars for McLaren. Aboard the model, which mates a 5-litre Chevrolet engine to a five-speed Hewland DG300 gearbox, Scheckter made an immediate impact. He finished 2nd in the opening round at Riverside before winning the next three events back-to-back at Laguna Seca, Michigan International Speedway, and Mid-Ohio.

That flying start with the T101 helped Scheckter secure the SCCA L&M Championship spoils, notably beating Brian Redman and Mark Donohue. Scheckter says the secret to his success in the lively Trojan was to turn in a string of quick early laps to build an initial advantage that he could maintain to the chequered flag.

This 1974 example, chassis 106, was the last of the six T101s constructed. It was sold new to renowned historic racer Bobby Bell, who campaigned the car in that year’s British Racing Drivers’ Club Formula Libre series, winning three rounds. After a stint in Switzerland, the Trojan was purchased by John Narcisi in August of 1987 before undergoing a restoration the following year.

Scheckter then bought the car in 1999 to add to a personal collection that documents his racing career. Accordingly, chassis 106 wears the “Winston Delta Tires” livery and the race number #0 from his 1973 run to F5000 championship glory. This Trojan T101 represents a rare opportunity to purchase a championship-winning model direct from an F1 world champion.
