Mk2 Turner (ex-Arthur Carter)

Description:

In 1960, a Turner Sports Mk II model appeared, with improved interior trim and further minor styling revisions. From 1960, the front suspension became Triumph Herald-based. In 1961, as well as the Austin and Coventry Climax engines, other options were introduced, such as the Ford 105E 997 cc and 109E 1,340 cc units. Finally, in 1963, the new Ford Cortina1,500 cc engine was also made available. About 150 Turner Sports Mk II models were made. Many Turners had illustrious racing careers such as the legendary VUD 701 driven by John E Miles in the Autosport National Race Championship of 1963–64, winning outright 15 of the 17 races against the works cars of Jaguar, Lotus and Aston Martin. Fully developed as a space-framed Modsports Race Car using a Cosworth engineered Ford 1824cc, VUD 701 is known to be the fastest of all the racing Turner Sports Cars, holding many UK class lap records to the present day. Throughout the UK, USA and Australia, the owner drivers of these lightweight nimble Turner Sports Cars are still winning in their class and overall, beating much more powerful cars.

This car was supplied new on the 25/04/1962 by Alexander Engineering of Haddenham to Mr Arthur Carter.  It's unknown exactly what he did with the car but before his passing in 2018 he mentioned the car had been raced in period by various different drivers.  After his ownership the can spent its time in Ireland.  It kicked around through various ownership awaiting restoration until 2005 when Dave Rees of Derbyshire rebuilt it for the 2006 HSCC HRS season. In 2015 the car was the sold to Paul Woolmer who restored to the car to its current colour scheme and raced it in the WestLake cup at Goodwood Members meeting.  In more recent years the car has been mechanically overhauled by Autorevive London, who run the car to this day. It has been a front running car in the Equipe Classic Racing series in GTS and pre-63 with many class wins and overall podiums. It's most recent outing was with equipe GTS at donington with a 3rd overall finish. Running A-series drive train, the engine was built by Classic & modern Engineering at a cost of £18000 and has done two race meetings since a full refresh. The gearbox has been fully rebuilt with a new gear set by Hardy Enginnering.  A great little car, perfect for entry level into historic motorsport and a bit different to an MGB!
