Following worldwide success in Formula Ford from the 16F of 1969 to the 45F of 1981, the 50F was John Crosslé’s first design to feature pull-rod inboard suspension, radiator behind the driver and a slim new body. Although considered a 1982 model, Dennis Firestone gave the 50F its debut in October 1981 at the SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta, finishing 0.4s behind the winner after leading a field of 37 cars until what he believed to be the final lap.

From the outset, against extreme competition and top drivers from the glory days of Formula Ford, the 50-series was a winning design.

For 1983 the 55F featured improved cooling, revised suspension geometry and a stiffer chassis with fixed forward-facing stays from the roll hoop. Straightforward to drive and robust in construction, these cars were popular with race schools and successful on tracks across Europe and the USA.

This is 55F-83-09, initially a Works car, sold later in 1983 to Irish racing legend Tommy Reid with his trademark red bodywork. Now part of a notable private collection the car has been professionally prepared, maintained and stored to a very high standard in readiness to race at short notice. Changed plans mean that the car is offered for sale, ready for action.

FF1600 Kent engine is freshly rebuilt, legal and on the button (thanks to a permanent battery conditioner). Hewland H9-4366 is the original Mk9 gearbox fitted by the factory when this car was completed in April 1983, refurbished and in very condition.

Bodywork (some brand new and never used) is pristine in white GRP.

With the original constructor still very much in business and operating continuously from the same factory since 1960, Crosslé owners are uniquely privileged in terms of parts and support. The original chassis plate is fitted.

The UK and several European countries have excellent Kent Formula Ford 1600 series in which this car would be welcome and competitive. Virtually nothing is needed.

The car can be viewed by prior arrangement near Luton Airport and transported anywhere at competitive rates.
